Beekeepers' Essential Guide to Bee-Friendly Hive Finishes

Beekeepers, alongside environmentalists, are on a continual quest for methods and products that promote thriving apiaries. A crucial yet frequently underestimated factor in maintaining hive health is choosing a bee-safe hive finish. The use of an appropriate finish not only protects the hive's wooden structure but also ensures the well-being of its buzzing residents. This approach fosters a happy balance between protecting the timber and holistic, eco-friendly beekeeping practices.

Whittle Waxes Evolution Hardwax Oil, a product derived from natural, sustainable raw materials (such as beeswax, carnauba wax and jojoba oil), is safe for our planet and emerges as the favourite for Beehive finishes due to its natural, non-toxic properties. When applied, it penetrates deep into the wood, providing a sturdy barrier against moisture and decay while maintaining the timber's ability to breathe. This is essential in preventing the buildup of harmful mould and mildew within the hive, whilst the beeswax is a substance already familiar to the hive's ecosystem. Whittle Waxes Evolution Hardwax Oils not only protect the timber but also contribute to a healthy interior environment for the bees, echoing the ethos of sustainable beekeeping.

In contrast, conventional finishes like varnishes and polyurethanes contain harmful chemicals that can leach into the hive and negatively impact bee health. Not only do these finishes pose potential harm to the bees, but they also have a detrimental effect on the overall environment.

The Dangers of Wood Rot for Beehives

Beehives face the persistent threat of wood rot due to exposure to the elements. This decay not only compromises the structural integrity of the hive but also invites dampness conducive to diseases detrimental to bee health. The biggest concern in the ongoing battle against rot is wood finish toxicity and its potential impact on the bees, a non-negotiable factor in sustainable beekeeping.

Whittle Waxes Evolution Hardwax Oil is the natural solution for beekeepers searching for a bee-safe, durable wood finish. Its formulation is tailored for the unique demands of beekeeping, offering a protective armour against wood decay without the adverse effects associated with traditional wood treatments.

Why Choose Evolution Hardwax Oil?

No Harsh Odours

Strong chemical smells can disorient bees, affecting their ability to forage and return safely to their hives. By eliminating this risk, beekeepers can ensure their hives remain a safe, welcoming environment for their bees.

Non-Toxic and Food-Safe

The safety of the hive is the beekeeper's utmost priority. Evolution Hardwax Oil's non-toxic, food-safe, bee-safe composition ensures that bees are not exposed to harmful substances, mitigating risks related to toxicity and ensuring the health of both the bees and the ecosystem they support. Its non-toxic and food-safe components ensure that bees are not subjected to potentially harmful chemicals, safeguarding the hive's internal environment and, by extension, the quality of the honey produced. This aspect is crucial for beekeepers dedicated to natural, sustainable beekeeping practices.

Micro-Porous Breathability

Unlike conventional paints or varnishes that seal off wood pores, Whittle Waxes Evolution Hardwax Oil allows the wood to breathe. This critical feature helps maintain optimal temperature regulation and humidity levels within the hive, mirroring the natural habitation conditions bees have evolved to thrive in.

Eco-Friendly

Derived from natural ingredients, Evolution Hardwax Oils’ unique blend of bee-friendly features ensures that beekeepers no longer have to compromise between protecting their hives and preserving the health of their bees or the environment.

Navigating the Maze of Wood Coatings

Awareness and discernment in choosing wood coatings have never been more crucial. Coatings to avoid include:

  • Polyurethane: Often laden with VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), these coatings can endanger bee health through toxic off-gassing.
  • Varnishes: Containing solvents and chemicals, varnishes pose ingestion and inhalation risks to bees.
  • Oil-Based Paints: Characterised by strong odours and fumes from harsh chemicals, these paints are inhospitable to the delicate respiratory systems of bees.
  • Stains or Treatments with Toxic Additives: Potentially containing preservatives or pesticides, such treatments introduce unnecessary risks to the hive.

What does a beekeeper think of Evolution Hardwax Oil?

“It has been at least a season now since I coated the inside of my hives with the Whittle Waxes hardwax oil and there has been no sign of any issues for the bees. I have also coated one ‘honey super’ hive and that so far looks fine as well.

I believe there are no issues for the bees with Whittle Waxes hardwax oil because it contains all natural ingredients. I would also say that the beeswax in this oil plays a big part in the compatibility. And of course that it is non-toxic, water resistant and lasts a long time.

I give the coating plenty of time to dry. Here in far NW Tassie we have rather high humidity so drying time needs to be considered. Under ideal warm dry weather conditions the oils will dry a lot quicker.

I would also like to mention that the Whittle Waxes hardwax oil is great to work with – no nasty smells, easy to apply and a small amount does go a very long way!

For me, it was all about finding a finish that was compatible with the activity inside a hive. I needed a product that would protect the timber without affecting the bees. The bees will handle the sealing of the timber in the long-term, but it’s a quicker process if I do it for them with hardwax oil.

It was the all-natural ingredients that sparked my interest initially but I was worried about compatibility and safety. Whittle Waxes were kind enough to send me a small sample tin which I used to coat a hive entrance reducer made from Tassie oak. I watched carefully for any hint of a problem from the bees but saw nothing at all – the bees behaved as per normal.

The fact that the oils also give the pine in the hives a clean clear natural look I personally think is awesome. I have now used the Whittle Waxes hardwax oil on a number of other household items including our cutting board, a fruit bowl and our coffee table. I couldn’t be happier with the results and I plan on doing our dining room table next.”

The Whittle Waxes Story

Most companies go from A to Z. We went from Z (Zimbabwe) to A (Australia). What an exciting journey it has been - and it's not over yet!

Although Whittle Waxes officially launched in Australia in 2004, our journey (and love affair) with timber started a long time before that. Company founder, Giles Whittle-Herbert, grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe, where he inherited a passion for working with wood that goes back generations. For many years he ran a successful carpentry business in Zimbabwe.

On arrival in Australia in 2004, Giles noticed a big gap in the market for natural and safe hardwax oils. He already had an excellent working relationship with an overseas supplier, so all he needed to do was make the Australian market aware of the many benefits of hardwax oils.

20 years later, Whittle Waxes is proud to be leading the way in the supply of natural, high quality finishes in Australian, with satisfied customers across the board, including home renovators, professional polishers, flooring suppliers, timber companies, architects, and designers.

Our Evolution Hardwax Oil continues to exceed expectations and is now a firm favourite all across the country, particularly with those who appreciate a quality finish that is safe, durable and environmentally friendly. Whittle Waxes has introduced a number of other quality products, including colour stains, exterior oils, Wax Polish and Floor Care for easy floor maintenance.

At Whittle Waxes, we genuinely love to interact with our clients so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Thanks for all your support!
